More exalted future. [30th Jun 2006|10:27 am]
I have these images in my head of huge Guild slave freighters.

Nexus as a hive world like Necromunda.

Lots of magitech. Warstriders really end up becoming Macross/Evangelion/every-bloody-space-anime-ever flying space suits. Automaton remnants from the first age.

Perhaps the oceans on the Creation map correspond to areas where vast numbers of planets were destroyed during the war against the primordials. Perhaps they were never there. There should be some water planets scattered around there.

Underworld -> Underverse (as in Chronicles of Riddick)

How many stars are there in our galaxy?

Edit: ~ 100 billion stars

Exalted as a Space Opera [29th Jun 2006|02:17 pm]
[Current Mood |thoughtfulthoughtful]

I've been immersing myself in some Star Wars material again over the last few days. This has included starting to replay Sith Lords and flicking through some of the Star Wars D20 material. However I'm finding myself running up against the fact that I don't really like D20 that much.

I have noticed in the past that Exalted could be adapted without too much hassle into a space opera. The setting and background could largely be left unchanged. Some map alteration would have to take place. It could be assumed that the map shows a rough layout of systems. Cities could be considered to be systems. There are faults with this idea but they could be worked through.

The setting would have elements in common with Star Wars and Warhammer 40k. Enemies would be very 40k but hopefully the feeling of the setting would be more like Star Wars. Heroism, chaotic things at the edge of space, the remnants of an old civilisation, demons... The Underworld and Yuan Shan could be considered to be extra dimensions. Yuan Shan could connected to some sort of jump gate technology. Shadowlands would have to be thought through. I guess there would be tainted areas of space. (hmmm... the night/day thing with Shadowlands would have to be thought out.)

Flavour/Fluff specifics would be the primary difference. Personal firearms could be stated in a way similar to an Exalted Modern conversion.Travel would have to be by spacecraft which could be adapted from existing naval and land transport. The elemental directions could be kept. Forest systems tend towards the east, etcetera.

Problems (off the top of my head):
The celestial nature of the gods/exalts; their correspondences.
Solar essence could be aligned to all suns.
Now things get sticky: Elemental Dragons, Lunars, Maidens.
Each planetoid could be classified as only one of seven potential types (Moon, Earth, Mercury, Venus Mars, Jupiter, Saturn).
The Elemental dragons would correspond to habitable planets. (Earth type)
For the setting the idea (for the cosmology) of a moon could be fixed as moons around habitable planets. Alternatively Lunars could correspond to any and all moons, but I'm not sure that would be a good idea. (Where's the Endor?)
A series of planetary types could be fixed and assigned to each of the Maidens (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn as types).

Hmmm... I think that will do for now. It gets some of my ideas down.

Buckets of Dice [28th Jun 2006|01:55 pm]
I'm currently in the process preregistering for Buckets and I've stalled at choosing a character for the Grand Strat.

Is there a higher resolution picture of the world map available? The maps which are there only make the location of Rose clear. I'm not certain where the other countries lie.

I've spent some of the last couple of days playing Starwars Battlefront. Every time I play a Starwars game these days I have this desire to actually play a Starwars Roleplaying game.

Well, in this case it's either that or play through Sithlords again.

While pondering list operations in Haskell for an upcoming exam I found myself singing "Bool Operator" to the tune of the song Smooth Operator. Pondering this, and singing in the shower in general, lead me to ponder a new TV show along the lines of Can't Cook, Won't Cook called "Can't Sing, Won't Sing".

I expect it to be a resounding failure.

It would also be a perfectly good reason to have appalling dress sense.

Study week this week. Lots of math. Sylow Theorems, Simple Groups, Finitely Generated Abelian Groups, Groups operating on sets... yeah, it's gibberish.

I've been reading Stranger in a Strange Land :

Woman: "Really? Doctor, I think your stories are simply divine~"
Doctor Jubal Harsh aw: "Thank you."
W: "Oh, I really do. I put one of your tapes on my player and let it lull me to sleep almost every night."
DJH: "Higher praise a writer cannot expect."

It is quite an amusing and well written book. I am enjoying it. The weather is nice. (insert more good feeling).
I now know the source of the word grok. I'm coming to fully grok the word grok.

[Current Music |Ministry - You Know What You Are]

David Nosafora (Auckland) talking about Troy Flavell:
"I told him, 'Son, what is it with you. Is it ignorance or apathy?' He said, 'David, I don't know and I don't care.'

Last Friday I was in a classroom waiting for a lecture to start and I got the very distinct impression that at that very moment in time I was in a David Lynch film. White noise, uncomfortable overly loud sounds, murmured snatches of alienating mundane conversation, the feeling of being in a dream; it was all there. The world must be an uncomfortable place for Mr. Lynch.

On Saturday or Sunday Mary-Anne found a toy which had Darth Vader on his Imperial Chopper. Darth Vader on a Harley.

The Warehouse is a special place. Go there, people watch and feel like you're in a David Lynch movie?

I think I want to see Slither. Talking hillbilly zombies can't be bad right? "Open the door honey, it's family fun day. You get to do what ever you want on family fun day." Come on, zombies that plead for you to give them your braiiiins.

I'm becoming quite interested in the new 4th White Wolf game. Perhaps I'm just a new game slut. It's not as if ever run or play the things. I my comment more on this later.

I wonder when I find myself repeating. [22nd Feb 2006|12:26 am]
[Current Music |VNV Nation - Joy]

Shed in the air, don't be afraid to care.

There are people under tables too afraid to face the sun.
Hiding from the vitamins which prevent fish 'n' chip death,
of which plunket is so worried about.

The Pale people in black seem to rule the airwaves.
Or... ice masks and broken bones.
Or... dirt tracks and blue shorts.
Or... Infomercial and cheap brown suits...

The Free-styler's are on the prowl.

I witnessed the crucifiction of the musical Christ.

I rip my head backwards and give to the world:
vomit, or the carry of the unfettered mind.

I heard that things are different from what they seem.
On a misty Tuesday brain-pan the gyrating of pink and brown flesh would shift to the flexing royal bakeware.
The windows that are the eyes are clear and empty, blue and free of obstruction.

blah fucking bleach

I want to tell the world that I love you all! You're all so special to me! [21st Feb 2006|12:20 pm]
[Current Mood |so very ernest]
[Current Music |Bauhaus - Paranoia, Paranoia]

I got out of bed because I had to throw up. I'm really sick. I mean REALLY sick.

I feel unusual because my antidepressants are making me hairy.

Last night I had to shave my entire body. Apparently, the lice that I caught from Amanda's friend are really hard to get rid of. I look quite strange with no hair and eyebrows. I'd post pictures, but my webcam is broken.

I am making this journal friends only because I don't want the world to read what I'm writing, even though I'm posting it on the internet.

I want to say thanks to simon and Abbey and Dave and the other Simon for helping me on Saturday. You guys are the best. By the way, if you happen to find my wallet, keys or underwear, could you SMS me? Adrian has my number.

I went to the doctor yesterday, and he said I have a terrible skin disease which prevents me from coming into contact with other human beings. And bipolar disorder.

That's enough for now. But I'll leave you with this thought - sharing your life with strangers on the internet is the cheapest form of therapy available. Leave a comment and tell me I'm beautiful.

Radio DragonBlooded [8th Feb 2006|07:41 am]
[Current Mood |sleepy]
[Current Music |The Sisters of Mercy - Kiss the Carpet]

I've had all sorts of thoughts for posts recently, but forgotten all of them but this useless gem...

While listening to the radio I heard an add describing (very very briefly) the background for the Exalted roleplaying game. I'll be clear here, I don't mean that the description was similar to the background of Exalted; words like Dragonblooded and Deathlord were used. It turned out that it was a Uni advert for a 3rd year AMST paper which concerned mythology, including modern subcultures which follow their own mythologies.
